About
Courtney Bass, LMHC (she/her)
My clients will tell you that I don’t have a poker face. I have a sense of humor and make space for both pain and joy. I am just as quick to share a laugh with a client as I am to shed a tear. Most importantly, I am totally invested in you. I am affirming, celebratory, and collaborative.
I have worked in a variety of clinical settings including an Intensive Outpatient/Partial Hospitalization Program for clients with eating disorders and trauma as well as for a shelter-based Assertive Community Treatment team, serving some of New York City’s most vulnerable. My experience in helping individuals across the spectrum of trauma disorders has taught me to recognize and respect the impact of trauma in the lives of my clients.
Today, the clients I work with have experienced trauma of all kinds, including childhood abuse, intimate betrayal, sexual abuse, military/combat trauma, racism, ableism, homophobia, transphobia, physical and emotional abuse, neglect and emotional invalidation, and dysfunctional families. Trauma may show up in a variety of ways including excessive rumination, disordered eating, attachment issues, addiction, perfectionism, emotional numbness, anger, and isolation. My clients are also some of the most creative, insightful, funny, loving, big-hearted, and wonderful people I’ve ever met. My job is to support them in reprocessing those old traumatic experiences, so their core self is in the driver’s seat.
I celebrate diversity.
I am committed to being a culturally responsive therapist. I aim to create a safe, affirming, and celebratory space for clients of all sizes, races, ethnicities, genders, sexual identities, spiritual and religious faiths, relationship structures, and abilities. I work to acknowledge and challenge my own privilege and biases, and I am committed to my personal growth.
I am LGBTQIA+ affirming, and I work with folks of all genders and sexual identities.
I recognize systemic and racial oppression as trauma.
I believe in body neutrality and health at any size.
I am sex and kink positive.
I work with individuals in polyamorous and ENM relationships.
I work with folks within their spiritual and religious belief system.
